Tax Resistance

Tax resistance is a refusal or resistance towards the payment of taxes made by the individuals or a group of individuals or an organization. The tax resiatance showed by the people has many causes. The causes are opposition to the policies of the government or simply out of simple opposition to the government. The cause of this kind of opposition may be the special character of the government. It has often happened in the human history that some people or an organization has shown tax resistance towards the government as the government has involved itself in some controversial matters like the declaration of war against another nation or publication of any controversial matter.

The controversial matter may be religiously sensitive issues or language relatede matters. In the history this type of resistance was shown by members of some religious groups like Quakers. Other than the Quakers other groups like the Pacifists have often taken the course of tax resistance to draw public support in favour of their demand. Pacifists always protest against those ideas and laws which express solidarity with ideas of war mongers. Pacfists are very much active in the countries like United States of America. In the United States of America the pacifists have often taken the path og tax resiatance. So it be safely saide that the technique of tax resistance is actually one of the effective arms of the nonviolent prostestors. Nonviolent resistance was choosen by the great leader of Indian National Movement Mahtama Gandhi. Under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi the Indians refused to pay many taxes to the imperial governments. Those taxes which were considered as unjust by the leaders of Indian National Movements were selected for tax resistance. Under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi the farmers of Champaran refused to pay land revenue to the imperial British Government. Mahatma Gandhi also led the Civil Disobedience Movement and in this movement Salt Law was violated by the prostestors to resist the opression of the imperial British Goverments.

In the history of Europe the anarchists often took the course of tax resistance. But actually the anarchists maintaining their characters opposed any institute which demanded respect from the people. As a result the anarchists opposed every governments of the world what ever may be their characters. Christian anarchists of Europe showed tax resistance in the same fashion as the pacifists did this tax resistance in many places of the world. Christian anarchists refused to pay for maintaining a very violent cuivil defence.

Arguments in favour of tax resistance

There are also a few people supporting tax resistance. Some people are of the opinion that people can deny to pay taxes as it comes within their demacratic right. This right to deny the payment of taxes is like the veto power enjoyed by some members of an organization.

Redirection of tax payment

Some tax payers who have refused to pay taxes or the portion of a tax sometimes compensate the government by contributing in many charitable funds. They think that in this way they can make good the loss of the government.
